Summer is slowly coming to an end and Fall will be here before we know it. As the leaves change and the weather cools off, Fall is the perfect time to tackle projects around the house and ensure your home is ready for the impending cold winter weather. We’ve compiled a list of relatively easy home projects to help get you started!

1. Prep your outdoor spaces and lawn for the cooler weather

You’ll thank yourself come Spring if you take a few important steps during the Fall to properly clean up your outdoor areas. Protecting your annuals and perennials from the cold with a thick layer of mulch will keep them nice and healthy and ready to bloom in the Spring. Think of the mulch as a nice cozy blanket for your flowers during the winter.  To keep your lawn healthy and nutrient rich during the winter, spread seed and fertilizer during the Falls months. Don’t forget to properly cover your outdoor lawn furniture, move any outdoor plants inside, and clean up your mower and other lawn tools for a fresh start next Spring!

2. Check your gutters

Gutter fall leaves

We know this one is easy to put off and overlook, but it is important to regularly maintain your gutters to keep your roof, walls, landscaping, and foundation safe. If you haven’t checked on your gutters lately, you might be surprised how many leaves and how much debris has built up over time. The best time to clean your gutters is during the Spring and Fall.  First you should access the wear and tear. If your gutters have major cracks or other damage, it might be best to replace them. If your gutters are in decent shape, clear all of the debris and flush them out using the spray nozzle on your garden hose. While you are at it, don’t forget to check your downspouts once the gutters are cleared. Ensure there are no clogs and that water is draining properly.

3. Paint the exterior of your house

The cooler weather and less frequent rainy days make Fall the perfect time to paint the exterior of your house while dramatically improving your curb appeal! Less moisture and humidity in the atmosphere are also advantages of Fall weather and contribute to the longevity of the paint job. If you aren’t ready to paint the entire exterior of your house, consider just the front door. Your fall wreath and decorations will really pop and create a fresh, welcoming entrance.

4. Make sure your indoor spaces are happy and healthy

You’ll be spending a lot more time indoors and now is the perfect time to show your home some love. Start by checking the insultation on your windows. A popular trick to check if you have any drafty areas is the flame test. Place a candle or hold a lighter flame next to the window to see if it moves. Using caulk and weather stripping is the easiest way to seal up any drafty areas. Next, have a professional check your furnace to ensure it’s in tip-top shape, especially if it’s an older unit. You don’t want to wait until it’s too late on this one! If you have a fireplace, make sure you inspect it thoroughly before lighting it or turning it on for the first time. Don’t forget to organize your mud room and/or entry way! With fall and colder weather comes muddy shoes, coats, and umbrellas. Using baskets, coat racks, and bins to organize the bulky items will help clean the space tidy.

5. Winterize your driveway and walkways

Driveway sealing

The harsh winter weather can worsen any existing damage to your driveway so addressing those issues now will save you a bigger headache later! Pulling weeds, sealing cracks, and repairing damage prior to sealing or resurfacing your driveway is key. Make sure to schedule your driveway project soon though, as nighttime temperatures need to be at least 50 degrees for proper sealing to take place.
